8 Simple & Easy Tips To Ensure Your Website Is Working For Your Business

Recently I wrote about 5 Reasons Why Your Small Business Needs A Website, to follow on from that I thought I would share 8 simple and easy tips to ensure your website is working to its full potential, reaching your ideal clientele.

There’s no point in having a website if your visitors can’t navigate to find what they are looking for or if your website doesn’t work for your business.

So, let’s get started to making sure your website is working for your business!

5 Ways To Brand Your Website

There are various ways to brand your Squarespace website, but today I wanted to take a step back and talk about, and share, 5 ways you can brand your website - not matter what platform you are on.

1 | Logo

This may seem obvious, but I have seen so many small businesses get this wrong.  Make sure your logo is present, on your website, in a prominent position, at an impactful size - This doesn't mean having an oversized logo.

It also doesn't have to be conventionally placed on the right, it could be placed in the middle, or the left, but, wherever it is placed, ensure it remains in the same spot on all your pages so to create a better user experience for your readers/customers/clients.

2 | Fonts and colours

There are some ground rules I always follow when designing or redesigning a website, especially when it comes to fonts and colours as they make a massive impact.  Obviously keeping in line with the brand I also ensure the following:

Fonts:

I always have 2 main fonts maximum, and an accent font - one main font for headings, and one main font for body copy.  The accent font is often used sparingly and usually when there is something to highlight, like a quote, or testimonial.

Being able to differentiate between the two main fonts will help create a sense of hierarchy and order with your content.

It’s also important not to forget the font used in your buttons, and navigation will also need to be considered and kept consistent.

Colours:

Colour can create memorability and again can have a huge impact on the appearance of your website.  Think Tiffany's and you will instantly remember that distinct blue they have as part of their brand.

I always use the brand's colour palette to create consistency and then based on the business and brand values determine a website's style. For example, is the brand colourful and bold or subtle and minimal?

Tip - Always ensure your buttons and call to actions are a different style and colour to other “non-action” elements on the page - This will ensure your buttons stand out, making them clearer to the visitor.

3 | Messaging and story - Tone of voice

The language you use on your website should reinforce your brand values, vision and personality.  By adding that extra dimension and paying attention to the words on your website you are reinforcing your brand because after all, a brand is more than just a logo.

If your brand is bright, bubbly and colourful, and your audience is young, creative people, then a friendly down to earth, informal approach and tone of voice may work in your favour.
However, if your website is a formal, corporate business the tone of voice should reflect this.

4 | Photos, graphics, illustrations

Colour, text, and type can only do so much.  Photos, graphics, icons, illustrations, and patterns are a few of the best ways to truly differentiate your website.

Not only can these things help to break up a text heavy page, but they can also add a continuity from other branded material, like your business card, or PDF documents.

5 | Ensure you have a professionally branded email address

Firstly, it's so important to include your contact details on your website.  Ideally, they should be easy to find and conveniently placed so that your clients/customers can reach you with ease.  I add contact details, in particular, social media links and my email address in the footer of my website so that it is present on every single page.

The one thing that looks REALLY unprofessional is having an email address that is not on brand.  That's right, having an email address that looks something like kri5hnasolank1982@hotmail.com will do more damage than you think.

Ideally, you want an email address that:

  1. Strengthens your brand
  2. Leaves a good first impression
  3. Builds trust and credibility
  4. Promotes your brand

That is exactly why I choose to use a branded email address - hello@krishnasolankidesigns.com - on my website.

6 | Social media

Ok so, I know I said I would mention 5 tips, but here's an extra tip!

If you link to any social media profiles from your website, makes sure they are correctly branded with imagery, icons, patterns, colours and fonts that are consistent with your brand and website.
 

Your website is an extension of your brand, and in this day and age, it is so important to ensure your website is on brand and is consistent.  I hope you found the tips useful in helping you brand your website.

10 Essential Web Design Tips You Need To Know For Your Website

A website is an essential part of every business's online presence - especially in this day and age.  Because it is such an important asset to your company's brand and overall image it is important to make sure your website works for you.  That is why I am sharing 10 essential web design tips with you today.


1| Define the purpose of your website

Because every website is different it is important to define the purpose of your website.  This will then help you plan what features, benefits, and content to display on your site.  Your homepage may not necessarily be the entry point into your website, especially if you have a blog, so bear in mind "one size does not fit all" and list all the essential elements you need to include when you are defining your website's purpose.

2 | Prioritise your content

For each page of your website, make sure you prioritise your content and give each section/block the relevant placement and prominence.  For example, if you have a Services page, highlight your service in a manner that stands to your reader first and foremost. That would be the goal of that page. in the same sense, a Contact page should make it easy for the reader to contact you - include and display the different ways you can be contacted - telephone, email, skype, store address - again make sure it is relevant to your business.

3 | CTA's on each page

Each page should include some form of a button or call to action (CTA) which lets the user continue on their journey around your website or make an enquiry.  If you have more than one Service/Product offering, include a button near each offering to make it easy for your reader to take an action.

4 | Choose fonts and Use heading styles wisely

Choosing a maximum of 2 fonts will help differentiate normal body copy and a heading style.  The heading style can be used to highlight a particular section and the body copy can be used as the normal text.  This will make it easier on the eye to read any large section of text and even make small chunks of text more appealing.


5 | Make it easy for your readers to contact you

Every website should include a link to a Contact page or include the contact information on the footer element of the website.  This will make it easy for any customers/clients or prospects get in touch with any enquiries or to book you.

6 | Add your social media links

Leading on from including your Contact page to your website, it's also a good idea to include your social media links as well.  It's common practice to include these in the footer area of your website, at the bottom of each page, and don't feel obliged to add all social media links, just add the ones you are most prominent on.

7 | Include testimonials/reviews from previous clients on your website

If you have any kind words from previous clients/customers then definitely include these!  It can be reassuring to a new potential client about work with you.

8 | Keep it clean and simple

Simplicity is key. You want to provide your potential client/customer with enough information to understand what you are offering and also make it look appealing.  If you have lots of text, either review it to shorten it or display it in a manner that is eye-catching and simple.

9 |  Make sure the page/product URL is keyword specific

Make sure your page URL are easy to remember, read and are relevant.  For example, "www.yourwebsite.com/about" is much better than "www.yourwebsite.com/1923747".  It surprising how this is so easily missed but can make sure a difference.  You can also ensure your blog posts are kept relevant as well, this is good for SEO as well.

10 | Make sure your website is responsive

Lastly, I can't stress this enough. Make sure your website is responsive and is suitable for mobiles and tablets.  You really can't afford to lose business because your website is not tailored for these mediums, esp as they are more widely used nowadays.
