The Lifestyle is a Plan podcast with Kelly Molson
How to love your lifestyle agency using "joy" as a business driver
Joy isn't soft.
It's a strategy.
I recently joined Kelly Molson on her Lifestyle is a Plan podcast - the podcast for creative founders building an agency that supports their life, not takes it over.
The episode is titled:
"How to love your lifestyle agency using 'joy' as a business driver."
But it's about more than joy.
It's about the deliberate choices that let you build something that actually works for you - without sacrificing what matters most.
Building the business on my terms
I didn't set out to follow the traditional agency playbook.
Full-time hires, endless capacity, growth for the sake of it - that was never the goal.
Instead, I built an associate agency model. One that gives me the agility to take on the right projects, the flexibility to protect my time, and the space to do work I'm genuinely proud of.
It's not the conventional route. But it's the right one for me - right now.
In this episode, Kelly and I dig into:
How the associate agency model works in practice
Why rejecting the traditional agency model was absolutely the right call
The role that building a personal brand has played in growing KSD
How "joy" can be used as a real, practical business driver
What keeps me focused on high-value design work
How I approach rapid, opportunistic expansion into new services
If you're building a lifestyle agency - or thinking about a more flexible model - this one's for you.
Joy as a business driver
Using joy as a filter sounds simple.
But it's one of the most useful business tools I have.
When I'm deciding whether to take on a project, expand into a new service, or say yes to an opportunity, joy is part of that decision. Does this align with the work I want to do? Does it fit the life I'm building?
It's not about avoiding hard work or difficult projects. It's about being intentional. Keeping choices open. Building something that has longevity - because it's built around what actually energises you.
That clarity shapes everything: the clients I work with, the services I offer, and the way KSD continues to grow.
